From NBC SportsAs it relates to the financial consequences of 49ers owner Jed York’s suspension, relative to the financial consequences of a player suspension, there’s no question that York received preferential treatment. But that’s not unique to York; the NFL’s disciplinary system inherently makes it far more costly (relative to income) for a player to be suspended than for an owner to be suspended.
A separate question lingers as to whether York received preferential treatment from the criminal justice system in Columbiana County, Ohio.
Earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle explored whether York’s expedited prosecution — which resulted in a one-day jail term and no probation, one day after the arrest — meshes with the usual approach to such cases. The Chronicle article explains that a review of all similar 2026 arrests in the county showed York and one other person were the only two out of 100 to have a prostitution-related charge reduced to disorderly conduct.
Per the report, a “large majority” of the other defendants received 90- or 180-day suspended sentences, including “strict probation requirements.”
Meanwhile, a new item from Daniel Farr of the New York Post focuses on a website that seeks to compel political candidates to refund contributions made by York, and that pushes to have his entire criminal file released , without redaction.
