Simmons vs. Buckner: Which NFC Contender Made the Smarter Trade?

Two NFC contenders. Two blockbuster defensive line additions. Two very different strategies.

The Chicago Bears have acquired Jeffery Simmons from Tennessee, while the San Francisco 49ers reunited with DeForest Buckner in a move that could significantly strengthen their Super Bowl ambitions.

THE PRICE DIFFERENCE

Chicago surrendered two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder, receiving a fifth-round selection in return.

San Francisco acquired Buckner for just a fourth-round pick.

The difference in investment is enormous.

SIMMONS: THE BETTER LONG-TERM ASSET

At 29, Simmons remains one of the NFL's premier interior defenders. Coming off an 11-sack season, he brings elite power, explosiveness and disruptive ability.

Chicago is investing in a defensive cornerstone who could dominate for years.

BUCKNER: THE BETTER BARGAIN?

At 32, Buckner is older but remains productive, recording four sacks through seven games in 2026.

His return addresses a critical weakness in San Francisco's defensive front, particularly with injuries affecting the pass rush.

Alongside Osa Odighizuwa and a potentially healthy Nick Bosa, Buckner could provide exactly the interior pressure the 49ers need for January.

THE VERDICT

Chicago acquired the younger player with greater long-term upside. But paying two first-round picks creates enormous expectations.

San Francisco sacrificed considerably less while addressing an immediate championship need.

Simmons may be the better player. Buckner could prove to be the smarter acquisition.

And if San Francisco wins its sixth Lombardi Trophy, that fourth-round investment could become one of the steals of the season.
