Buckner Took His Starting Job. He Might Give Him Something Better.

Gracen Halton earned his place on the 49ers' defensive line. Then DeForest Buckner arrived. But losing a starting role could become an unexpected opportunity for San Francisco's promising rookie.

Most rookies would struggle with losing their starting job after a breakthrough performance.

Gracen Halton sees something else: an opportunity.

The fourth-round defensive tackle started six of San Francisco's first seven games, stepping up amid injuries and establishing himself as one of the team's most promising young defenders.

Then the 49ers traded for DeForest Buckner.

Halton admitted he was disappointed. But according to the San Francisco Chronicle, his excitement about learning from Buckner quickly outweighed that frustration.

A Rookie Who Already Proved He Belongs

Halton has recorded two sacks and nine solo tackles this season. His 6.7% pass-rush win rate ranks third among rookie interior defensive linemen, according to Sumer Sports.

His defining moment came against Seattle.

Halton recorded a sack, forced a fumble and recovered it for a touchdown in San Francisco's 32-29 victory.

He became just the second 49ers rookie ever to record a sack and defensive touchdown in the same game.

That's impressive production for the 107th overall pick.

But his development is still far from complete.

From Watching Buckner to Playing Beside Him

There's a remarkable connection between the two players.

Before Halton's freshman season at Oklahoma, he watched Buckner train at the university's facilities alongside other established NFL defensive tackles.

Four years later, they're teammates.

Buckner, who recorded four sacks in seven games with Indianapolis this season, has embraced the opportunity to mentor San Francisco's younger linemen.

For Halton, that means learning directly from a three-time Pro Bowler who understands both the position and the 49ers' defensive culture.

It could also mean fewer snaps but more favorable opportunities as Buckner and Osa Odighizuwa attract attention from opposing offensive lines.

The NNN Take

The Buckner trade shouldn't only be judged by how many sacks the veteran produces.

Its long-term value could also depend on what happens to players like Halton.

Less playing time carries risks. Development requires meaningful game experience, not just mentorship.

But if Buckner helps Halton sharpen his technique while keeping the defensive rotation fresh, San Francisco could benefit well beyond this season.

Buckner may have taken Halton's starting job. Helping him become a better starter could ultimately be the more valuable contribution.
