From Niner News NetworkAiyuk Wants Back in the NFL. But the 49ers Hold the Key.
Brandon Aiyuk has hired a new agent to restart his NFL career. There's just one problem: San Francisco still controls his contractual rights.
Brandon Aiyuk wants another chance in the NFL.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the former 49ers star has hired veteran agent Drew Rosenhaus, who confirmed he is working to get Aiyuk playing again.
It's the first significant step toward a possible comeback after more than two years without an NFL appearance.
But wanting to return and being able to return are two very different things.
From $120 Million Star to NFL Uncertainty
In 2024, San Francisco signed Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million extension following his breakout 2023 campaign.
That season, he recorded 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging an impressive 17.9 yards per catch.
Then everything changed.
A serious knee injury ended his 2024 season after seven games. He hasn't played since October 20, 2024.
His relationship with the 49ers subsequently deteriorated, and the team voided his remaining contract guarantees in 2025.
Aiyuk has been on the reserve/left squad list since December 2025.
The 49ers Still Control What Happens Next
Here's the complication.
Aiyuk must seek reinstatement before he can resume his NFL career. San Francisco still retains his contractual rights.
A release could allow him to explore opportunities elsewhere. A trade is another possible outcome, but neither has been announced.
For the 49ers, this creates an unusual situation.
The team is 6-1 and dealing with injuries at wide receiver. San Francisco reportedly even explored bringing Jauan Jennings back from Minnesota.
Yet a receiver who once produced more than 1,300 yards in Shanahan's offense appears unlikely to be part of the solution.
It's a reminder that roster decisions involve more than talent alone.
The NNN Take
Aiyuk's ability was never the biggest question.
His health, contractual status and relationship with the organization now matter far more than his previous production.
The 49ers need dependable receiving options for a potential playoff run. Aiyuk needs an opportunity to rebuild his career.
But forcing those two objectives together would make little sense.
San Francisco doesn't need to reopen a failed partnership. It needs to resolve Aiyuk's future without compromising its own.
