The 49ers Are Off. The Rams Aren't — And Today's Game Matters More Than It Looks.

San Francisco enters its bye week at 6-1. But while the 49ers rest, the Rams have an opportunity to revive their NFC West ambitions — and their biggest obstacle might be themselves.

The 49ers won't play a snap this Sunday. Their division rivals won't all be so fortunate.

Los Angeles enters today's matchup against the winless Chargers at 3-4, already three games behind San Francisco in the loss column.

On paper, the Rams look like a dangerous team. Their record tells a different story.

And that contradiction is exactly why 49ers fans should pay attention.

The NFL's Most Misleading 3-4 Team?

The Rams average approximately 411 offensive yards per game and 24.3 points.

Matthew Stafford has thrown for 1,989 yards and 14 touchdowns. Kyren Williams is averaging 5.1 yards per carry, while Puka Nacua and Davante Adams have combined for 965 receiving yards.

Those aren't the numbers of a struggling offense.

But Los Angeles has a minus-five turnover differential, ranking 29th in the NFL. The Rams have also lost both NFC West games they've played.

Compare that with San Francisco: 6-1, a plus-58 point differential and a perfect 3-0 divisional record.

The Rams can move the football. The question is whether they can turn that production into consistent wins.

A Dangerous Opportunity Against the Chargers

The Chargers arrive at 0-6, averaging just 15 points per game.

They'll also be without star safety Derwin James, while the Rams have injury concerns of their own. Cornerback Trent McDuffie is questionable, along with tight end Colby Parkinson and center Coleman Shelton.

A victory would bring Los Angeles back to .500 and keep pressure on Seattle in the divisional race.

A defeat would leave the Rams at 3-5, facing an increasingly difficult road back into contention.

For San Francisco, either result offers useful information about how seriously to regard Los Angeles over the second half of the season.

The NNN Take

The 49ers shouldn't dismiss the Rams because of their record. Stafford's offense remains dangerous enough to threaten almost anyone.

But explosive production means little without execution.

San Francisco has built its division lead by winning games. Los Angeles still needs to prove it can turn impressive statistics into results.

Today's matchup won't decide the NFC West. It could reveal whether the Rams are ready to become a genuine threat again.
