From Niner News NetworkThe 49ers Don't Play Today. But Their Next Opponent Could Shape Their Trade Deadline.
San Francisco has a bye week, but Sunday's Raiders–Jets matchup could reveal more about the 49ers' next opponent — and what John Lynch should prioritize before November 10.
The 49ers enter their bye week at 6-1, with nine days remaining before the NFL trade deadline. Their next game comes November 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders, just two days before trading closes.
That makes today's Raiders–Jets matchup particularly interesting. Not because one game will determine San Francisco's trade strategy, but because it offers a useful test of two questions: how dangerous is Las Vegas, and where can the 49ers exploit it?
The Raiders' Numbers Tell Two Different Stories
Las Vegas enters Sunday at 3-4, but its offensive production is surprisingly strong.
The Raiders average 269 passing yards per game, fourth in the NFL, and 26.1 points per game. Yet their rushing offense ranks 31st at just 74.7 yards per game.
The defense tells an even more concerning story: 373.7 yards allowed per game, including 143.6 on the ground.
That imbalance creates an intriguing matchup for San Francisco.
A healthy Brock Purdy and an improving receiving group should have opportunities against this defense. Meanwhile, a Raiders offense struggling to establish the run could become predictable against a stronger 49ers defensive front.
But Las Vegas remains dangerous through the air.
What San Francisco Should Watch Today
Three developments deserve attention against the Jets.
First, can the Raiders establish a running game? Ashton Jeanty has struggled to find consistency, averaging approximately 3.1 yards per carry.
Second, how well does Las Vegas protect its quarterback? Interior offensive-line uncertainty continues, with Jackson Powers-Johnson questionable because of a back injury.
Third, can the Raiders' defense contain an offense that enters Sunday averaging just 19.6 points per game?
If the Jets consistently exploit Las Vegas defensively, San Francisco should have reason for confidence entering Week 9.
The NNN Take
The 49ers shouldn't make trade decisions based on one opponent.
But Sunday's game can help clarify something important: San Francisco may already have enough talent to exploit its next matchup without another expensive acquisition.
John Lynch's real challenge is identifying weaknesses that could hurt the 49ers against elite NFC contenders — not simply filling holes before the Raiders visit Levi's Stadium.
The deadline should be about building a championship roster, not winning next Sunday's matchup.
